Frequently Asked Questions

Pachyderm literally means "thick skinned" and refers to elephants, hippos and rhinos. We named the wine after the song "Southbound Pachyderm" and liked the illiteration of "Purple Pachyderm".

Purple Pachyderm makes Pinot Noir, Pinot Noir Rose, Pinor Noir Riesling from Sonoma County sourced pinot noir grapes. We also make Pachyderm Champagne brut, a non-vintage champagne from grapes in the Cormoyeaux region of the Marne Valley of France.

Yes, our wines are Vegan. Whereas some wineries use egg or gelatin as a fining agent, we do not.

We try to add some pairings in our tasting notes for each specific wine, but generally our lower alcohol pinots will pair well with anything from fish to poultry to steak. Our Rosé pairs well with oysters, fish and turkey as well as mild cheeses. And our Champagne goes well with shellfish, nutty cheeses, pasta and even chocolate!

Les does not make the wine. Although Les is involved in the process, Pachyderm wines are made by Ross Cobb, on of the most sought after Sonoma wine makers.

Yes. Our wines are 100% pinot noir grapes sourced from local vineyards. We offer Pinot Noirs that are applellation/blends (100% pinot grapes but from different vineyards) and single vineyard (100% pinor but from a single vineyard). The Pachyderm Rosé is made from 100% pinot noir grapes source specifically to make Rosé.

Our Pinot Noirs spend at least 18 months in barrel, and up to 3 years for the Don Quiballes! It then spends a year in bottle before being released, so we generally release our wines 3-4 years after harvest. The Rosé spends about 6 months in barrel and is sold the year after vintage and is meant to be drunk that year, although ours will last longer than most, due to the way Ross Cobb makes our wines.

We use 25% to 33% new French oak barrels.
